Identity Thief has two of the most likable comedic leads working today in Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, yet they fail to deliver on a premise that is really flimsy on the surface. There are some funny bits in the film, don’t get me wrong, but there aren’t any hilarious bits, or ones worth remembering. In fact, the movie’s more sentimental and character-driven than expected, which makes for some sweet and genuinely touching material. But it still feels hokey and cheesy, and the film adds up to one of those minor efforts I’ll ultimately end up forgetting in weeks.
