Promised Land is a rather great film, one that has received backlash for not taking a strong enough stance. Yet Damon’s central performance is the moral and emotional heart of the film, carrying it through the occasionally far-fetched plot twists. They work, though, as does the whole film; it’s an endearing, strong, subtle effort from Gus van Sant, one full of stark symbolism and great drive.
