In this DC animated feature, the Dark Knight begins his most personal war to protect Gotham City with the Justice League by his side. After a series of bizarre murders inspired by the Joker, Batman Blackmails Green Arrow into joining a conspiracy that tries to expose Green Arrow’s evil double-life. The film features the voices of Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Tim Daly, Loren Lester, Xzibit, Phil LaMarr, and Arleen Sorkin.

Now we come to the part where I tell you what I think each of the movies are going to be like. I think the first film, The Long Halloween, is going to be a much more episodic film than The Dark Knight. It will also be a film that is more focused on Batman’s villains, such as the Penguin, Two-Face, and especially Clayface.  In a way, I expect it to share the same tone and style as The Dark Knight , but the plot will be much more focused on the villains.  As such, the story will be very focused on the villains, and the themes will be about them.  I expect it to be very character-driven, with a focus on the villains.

The long-awaited sequel to 2011’s The Dark Knight Rises, Batman: The Long Halloween, is finally available on Blu-ray. The story begins eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, as Bruce Wayne is ailing, and Gotham City is divided between warring fiefdoms. Bruce is bedridden, Commissioner Gordon is in prison, and Harvey Dent is back as the Two-Face. It’s up to Selina Kyle and the series’s other heroes to put the city back together again.. Verdict

Summary

This two-part picture, which is unusually gloomy and melancholy for the DC Animated Universe series, is skillfully adapted from the comic book, but it never quite reaches outstanding level.

Plot:

Only the Caped Crusader can stop a serial murderer who kills victims on every holiday, beginning with Halloween.

Review of Part 1:

The first murder in Gotham City occurs on Halloween, and it seems to be a mafia hit: Carmine Falcone, the city’s most powerful mobster, may think it’s a turf war killing, but Batman (voiced by Jensen Ackles) and Captain James Gordon have different ideas. Following the bombing of District Attorney Harvey Dent’s house, in which he and his wife barely escape death, it may seem that Falcone or perhaps the Joker has targeted Dent for being a tough cop, but something is clearly wrong in Gotham. Every holiday, from Halloween to New Year’s Eve, another notable individual is murdered by the serial killer / assassin Batman believes he has identified, but when his primary suspect becomes the killer’s latest prey (right in front of Batman! ), Batman must restart his investigation and re-calibrate his sleuthing to find his man. Batman may have a chance against the anarchy building in Gotham with the assistance of Catwoman (voiced by Naya Rivera, who died in a drowning accident soon after recording her part).

Batman: The Long Halloween features appearances by Solomon Grundy and Joker. Part 1 is an unusually gloomy DC Universe Animated Movie from this series, and the tone is set straight away with a themeless soundtrack by Michael Gatt, whose music defies the animated film’s pattern. The picture seems a lot like a dark noir, with a hero who is shockingly oblivious to all of his tools and advantages, which is unusual for a Batman film. It finishes on a cliffhanger, leaving you eager to pick up Part 2 and finish the tale. Chris Palmer is the director.

Part 1’s Blu-ray version includes a digital code as well as various extra features such as supplementary cartoons and a DC Showcase short called The Losers.

Review of Part 2:

The Holiday Killer continues his murders on Valentine’s Day, leaving little totems at the crime site but no clues as to who is behind the serial killings (all by gunshot). Carmine Falcone beefs up his security because it appears that the killer has paid special attention to killing those closest to him (his son and sister), and Batman is having trouble catching up now that he has so many freaks on the loose: Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, The Mad Hatter, Penguin, Solomon Grundy, and his on-again, off-again relationsh When D.A. Harvey Dent is badly injured in an assault paid for by Falcone (half of his face is burnt off by acid), he turns into Two-Face, an unpredictable loose cannon who has Batman scrambling. The truth will ultimately come out, and Batman will catch his man… or lady, as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day become increasingly significant events for The Holiday Killer.

This time around, the second half of this two-part picture includes a lot more villain antics, and Batman is still having trouble getting his act together, requiring assistance from Catwoman at one point. The film would have benefitted with fewer iconic villains (Penguin’s appearance in one moment was excessive) and should have remained focused on Two-Face. The film maintains its integrity by being faithfully translated from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s comic book, but it’s a bit too crowded for its own good. This one is rated “R,” although I’m not sure why it didn’t get a PG-13 rating. I believe I heard one “F”-bomb, but… Chris Palmer is the director.

Part 2’s Blu-ray version includes a digital code and a DC Showcase short: Blue Beetle, as well as a sneak peek at the upcoming DC Universe animated feature and two extra cartoons.

When it comes to the Dark Knight, I can never get enough of the R-rated movies. Part 1 was absolutely brilliant and I was very excited to see what Part 2 entailed. However, I was very underwhelmed by Part 2 and felt it did not live up to the hype. I won’t spoil Part 2 for those who haven’t seen it or those who haven’t read the comics, but let me just say that the whole thing felt very rushed and underdeveloped..
