The hype for YouTube’s new Cobra Kai series revealed in a trailer, has gotten the internet buzzing. The series is set in the world of The Karate Kid and follows two of the original films’ stars, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, as they return to the Cobra Kai dojo to revive their once celebrated rivalry and battle for supremacy once again. The series also stars YouTube creators William Zabka and Logan Paul, who are returning to Cobra Kai . The series will be available on YouTube Red in 2018.
The eight-episode season 4 of the “Karate Kid” reboot “Cobra Kai” is going to be here before you know it, and this week we got our first look at what’s to come. Shown at New York Comic Con, the teaser trailer shows Charlie’s (William Zabka) brother comes to visit for a few days. He seems to be friendly with Daniel (Ralph Macchio), which doesn’t go over well with the elder karate student and his girlfriend.
It’s been a little while since we last heard from the future of ’80s Karate Kid revival, and we’re not sure what has taken the cast so long, but now that we have our first official teaser trailer for the season, we’re here to tell you, it’s about damn time.
Crane-Kicks the Internet in Cobra Kai Season 4 Teaser
Netflix has released a trailer for Cobra Kai season 4 and it seems like the dojo is open for business. Cobra Kai follows erstwhile villain Johnny Lawrence, now a middle-aged dropout, as he reopens the Cobra Kai dojo and teaches a new generation of karate pupils as a sequel to the Karate Kid films. Meanwhile, Daniel LaRusso returns to his once-loved hobby, and the old adversaries find themselves locked in a fight for the youth’s soul, with the line between good and evil (as much as such differences may be based on karate schools) becoming more blurred. As Daniel and Johnny, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka return, as does Martin Kove as Cobra Kai’s original – and, as of last season, current – sensei, John Kreese. Thomas Ian Griffith, who played Terry Silver, Kreese’s benefactor and villainous partner in The Karate Kid Part III, is also expected to return. (How’s that for a name for an 80s villain?) Mary Mouser, Xolo Mariduea, Tanner Buchanan, Jacob Bertrand, Peyton List, and Courtney Henggeler also feature in the program. Netflix will release the next season in December. This one is best described as a “teaser.” Apart from some karate stances filmed just for the Cobra Kai season 4 teaser, there’s no new video here, only the promise of more martial arts action from this wildly entertaining and unexpectedly emotional series. I’ve said it before, but I can’t believe how much I like Cobra Kai and how well it succeeds where so many other sequels to earlier films have failed. It’s also not a niche phenomenon; Cobra Kai is well-liked by a wide range of people. We were chatting about TV programs we watched after dinner last Thanksgiving, and my aunt and uncle – who are in their 60s and have never watched much television — mentioned Cobra Kai and said they adore it. Season 3 becomes openly anti-woke, portraying individuals who promote woke culture as, at best, well-intentioned fools, and the buzzwords and behaviors as instruments used by bad people to bully and victimize by behaving like victims themselves. (This show is really beautifully crafted.) All of this is fantastic, but the characters are what really elevate the program. Even when they’re depicted as broken or weak, the old guard is revered, and any satire of the films is done with affection. The new characters are also fantastic, with fascinating storylines and real issues, so being pulled away from Johnny and Daniel is never a chore. I will add, though, that I only have one problem with the series, which the Cobra Kai season 4 teaser emphasizes, which I wish it didn’t: I despise Daniel’s wife. What a wretched, arrogant, and ungrateful harpy she is. Take a look at the trailer from last season; can you image talking about someone you claim you love in front of other people like that? Season 3’s finest scene was when Kreese turned her arrogant speech against her, making her seem insane and showing Daniel and Johnny were correct about him. But I don’t want to focus on the bad; Cobra Kai is fantastic, and I hope some of the other sequels would see it and learn from it.
What did you think of the teaser for Cobra Kai season 4? Are you a fan of the show? Is Terry Silver’s Steven Seagal-like ponytail worth bringing back, and if not, is it even worth bringing him back? Leave your thoughts in the comments below, and stay tuned to Geeks + Gamers for more TV news!
