The second recognizable figure in the new recordings of the Suicide Squad is Emilia Harcourt, played by Jennifer Holland. On a group photo of the ARGUS agents, she is standing right behind her boss, Amanda Waller, and will of course be her main help in leading an uncontrolled team of crooks. In the comic, her role is almost the same, but she has something to hide from her colleagues, starting with the fact that she doesn’t really work for them, but also from those who think she works for them, in a triple game that has inevitably had terrible consequences… and that probably won’t be adapted in the film version. Unlike all the characters we’ve seen so far who are the inhabitants of New Earth, Harcourt appears exclusively in the continuity of Prime Earth. Let’s look at it together.
Emilia Harcourt’s life has always been a complicated web of lies, and even her name was not her real name. She was born somewhere in Russia and was recruited by the people, a secret organization that trained spies and super agents and informally funded shadow programs for the government. Emilia was one of their undercover agents, and she was sent to the United States with a brand new name to join the National Security Agency. From the NSA, Harcourt claimed to be the perfect agent until he received a mission that he had guided since his mission : She was chosen to contact Amanda Waller’s newly formed Task Force X, aptly named Suicide Squad, a team of super villains who were implanted with a nerve bomb and forced to participate in an impossible mission to keep their heads on their shoulders (literally). This project has aroused great interest among Harcourt’s true superiors, especially director Carla of the Temyo Meta prison for metamunites in Russia. While working with Waller, Harcourt provided his new boss with information that brought them closer to the Destruction Brigade, Carla’s first group of wannabes, to test their abilities in the field. She stole information about the agents, technology and resources from Task Force X, which she sent to Carla so he could upgrade the brigade. The ultimate plan was to find a way to properly arm and control the meta-humans, to reduce them to the biological weapons they should have been all along, and to return the planet to its true owners, the ordinary people, who were exiled by the sudden appearance of so many gods among them. Harcourt did an excellent job and even rescued a team from the Destruction Squad by sending a new recruit, Super Hacker Huck, to bring them to safety after the spectacular failure of General Zod’s rescue mission in the Phantom Zone… until something unexpected happened.
After a series of unfortunate events, the suicide squad finally fought against the Justice League, and the actions of Amanda Waller and Max Lord had unexpected consequences for both teams: First of all, the change in the leadership of Task Force X was that Amanda Waller was temporarily suspended and replaced by her most trusted employee, an NSA agent who was first in charge of supervising her. Amelia Harcourt. Ms could not believe such happiness because with her new leadership position she could be even more useful to Director Carla and her homeland. In her new role as Director of Operations, she even persuaded Captain Boomerang to betray the unit (he wasn’t American, so there were no patriotic issues at stake) and to work for her as Chief Operator, which he gladly accepted with all the promised rewards. Harcourt kept manipulating the team for a while and worked his way through the destruction team more than once, until his game was finally discovered by Hack, the same rookie who had brought them into the team. But it wasn’t so much that Harcourt Boomerang had the girl killed before she could tell anyone what she’d learned about her new boss. By the time Waller got back to his post, Harcourt had already sent all the necessary data to Carla and was improving the Destruction Squad as he wished. Waller, however, got tired of Russian imitators, and she got enough Kryptonite from Lex Luthor to develop a neural bomb for General Zod, making him the most powerful asset in the Suicide Squad: She sent a new formation directly to Temyo Meta’s prison and wanted to destroy all of Carla’s work. When the team really succeeded, Harcourt was ready to blow his cover out of revenge: She stole Waller’s gun, killed four technicians with it, and set up a self-destruct scene for the entire Belle Reve complex to erase Amanda Waller and all her work and database. When the suicide squad returned to base, they would have found nothing but a smoking crater waiting for them.
Emilia Harcourt is a highly intelligent, undifferentiated and manipulative woman, an agent of the people who infiltrated the NSA to infiltrate Task Force X, and who plays an inevitably long and complex game. Trained in espionage, sabotage and covert operations, she is one of the best Russian agents on American soil, professional, invisible and absolutely deadly. Emilia Harcourt believes that all metahumans are just a commodity that ordinary people can use as a living weapon, and she is fascinated by the way Amanda Waller achieved this: As soon as his inspiration loses its usefulness for their common and higher purpose, he is ready to burn him and everything else, so that his homeland becomes a leading force in the next meta-human war.
