The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its vast array of characters, each with their own unique backstories that are revealed through both action-adventure movies and TV shows. This month’s film Avengers: Infinity War broke records worldwide in terms of box office earnings within just a few days, building up to the highly anticipated release next year. Among all these heroes, there was one character who had no backstory released yet – Hawkeye! What happened to him? We might have an answer soon….

Hawkeye is one of the most important characters in The Avengers, but he has a tragic backstory. In the MCU, Hawkeye became deaf when he was shot by Crossbones during a battle with Iron Man and Ant-Man.

Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner, is a popular character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming Disney+ Hawkeye TV program is something we’re looking forward to. Fans detected hearing aids in Clint Barton’s ears in the teaser, so he’ll be training Kate Bishop to be the next Hawkeye on the program. So, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, how did Hawkeye become deaf?

We don’t know which origin narrative for Barton’s deafness the show’s writers will use, but Hawkeye was also deaf in the comics. After losing his hearing due to a sonic arrow, his antagonist, the Clown, wounded him in the ears with arrows.

Hawkeye’s hearing difficulties developed after a harsh upbringing, according to a plot arc. However, I assume the series will not explore that option since the character has not had such issues so far.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, why is Clint Barton deaf?

Before I get started, I’d want to explain why Marvel Studios decided to have Hawkeye become deaf in the first place. Certain fans are angry with Marvel Studios because they believe some characters’ infirmities, such as Hawkeye’s deafness and Tony Stark’s alcoholism, were purposefully kept out.

However, I disagree with the idea since various infirmities have been shown in films and television series, such as Doctor Strange’s nerve damage, War Machine’s limb handicap, Scarlet Witch’s mental breakdown, and so on.

However, others argue that casting a deaf actor in the role of a deaf hero would be much more inclusive. To some degree, I agree, and so does Marvel Studios, which is why Alaqua Cox was cast in the role of Echo, a deaf superhero who will also feature in the Hawkeye TV show.

Echo is a deaf, Native American character in the comics, and Cox is both in real life, which is the appropriate approach to disability inclusion and portrayal on the big screen, rather than attempting to ignore or conceal them like they don’t exist.

In addition, Clint Barton’s Hawkeye played an important role in the MCU, and I assume the program will focus upon his handing the mantle to Kate Bishop. That’s where the opportunity to examine the more personal aspects of superhero life, such as his deafness, arises.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, how did Hawkeye become deaf?

Hawkeye was last seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, when the team defeated Thanos and Clint was reunited with his family. However, in the trailer for the new Hawkeye TV program on Disney+, Barton is shown sporting hearing aids in both ears, indicating that he is either deaf or on the verge of becoming deaf.

Although the video does not reveal how he went deaf, several indications may help us infer. For example, teaching Kate Bishop to be the next Hawkeye demonstrates that he is ready to hand over the reins. He was either deafened in war or had his hearing compromised in some other manner, causing him to understand that it was time to retire.

It’s pointless to conjecture, so we have two options: either wait for the program to premiere and explain the origin of Clint’s deafness, or search up the character in Marvel Comics to see if we can figure it out.

In the comics, is Clint Barton deaf?

So, how did Hawkeye become deaf in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after being fully normal before? If you look at the comics, there are a few choices, so I’ll lay them out and attempt to figure out which version of Hawkeye’s cause of deafness the show will most likely chose.

Barton gets deaf a few occasions in the comic. He generally recovers, although in certain adaptations, the character’s hearing is permanently ruined.

Clint Barton originally became deaf in Hawkeye #1-4, a 1983 miniseries. Crossfire, a clever marksman with cybernetic upgrades that improve his aim, is the character’s adversary. Crossfire creates a sound machine-like weapon in this case, which sends all of the superheroes into a frenzy.

Clint bites down on one of his sonic arrows to offset the sonic weapon’s effects, and although he succeeds to nullify the weapon’s effects, his actions make him almost deaf.

He would recover later, only to become deaf for the second time. His second foe, known as the Clown, seized two of Barton’s arrows and pierced him in both ears, effectively deafening him.

Finally, in 2014, a plot centered on Barton’s past, particularly his upbringing. He was molested as a child, and his hearing impairments may be traced back to that time.

However, I doubt that Hawkeye will investigate this possibility as the cause of Clint’s deafness. It would cause a schism between the series and the MCU as we’ve known it up to this point. If Barton had never had hearing problems before, they couldn’t possible have surfaced now as a condition from his infancy.

Physical injury sustained during the performance or between the show and the events of Avengers: Endgame will most likely be the cause of the handicap.

Clint Barton and Kate Bishop both faced the Clown in the comics, so it’s a good possibility that he’ll feature in the program. When you consider that he was the one who caused Barton’s deafness in the comics, it’s safe to assume that the Clown will play a major part in the series, maybe as the primary adversary.

Still, all of these options are just that: theories. The showrunners might go in an entirely other way and construct a new tale instead of basing Clint’s deafness on what occurred in the comics.

We won’t know for sure until the first episode of the series airs on Disney+ on November 24th, 2021. Regardless of the show’s trajectory, the fact that Marvel Studios will finally integrate this aspect of Hawkeye’s character into the MCU and include Echo played by a deaf actor is a fantastic thing.

The “Clint Barton becomes deaf in the MCU” is a question that has been asked for a while. The answer to the question is that Clint Barton became deaf after his fight with Loki. Reference: is clint deaf in the mcu.
