When Marvel Studios announced their Phase 4 slate last year, a lot of fans were excited to see The Eternals on the list. Since then, there have been minimal details about the upcoming MCU film. But today, a new video has surfaced online, offering the first look at the new super team. It’s worth noting, this video was not made by Marvel. It was made by a fan who attended Marvel’s recent panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

The three-minute video also offers a first look at the Eternals themselves, and, unsurprisingly, they don’t look like the MCU’s most otherworldly beings. They’re not aliens from faraway worlds who have come to Earth to intermingle with us poor mortals, but they are still a far cry from the Avengers, at least in terms of their appearance.

Marvel’s Eternals Angelina Jolie

Marvel Studios has released the very first images from Eternals, giving us a first look at the next film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the conclusion of the third phase of the MCU in 2019, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel Studios has delayed plans for a fourth phase due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ruling it out completely for 2020. Now, 2021 will be a busy year for MCU offerings, with four films scheduled for the second half of the year. Black Widow comes out in theaters and on Disney+ in July, followed by Shan-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in September, then Eternal in November, and finally the series ends with Sony’s Spider-Man: No return possible in December. Marvel recently released the first trailer for Shang Chi and has clearly begun promoting the theatrical release.

Confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Eternals is an adaptation of the comic book team-up of the same name directed by Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao (Nomadland). The movie Eternal has a stellar cast: Angelina Jolie as Tena, Salma Hayek as Ayaka, Richard Madden as Ikaris and Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo. They are joined in Eternal by Gemma Chan (Searcy), Brian Tyree Henry (Fastos), Don Lee (Gilgamesh), Lauren Ridloff (Macquarie), Leah McHugh (Sprite) and Barry Keoghan (Druig). At the 2019 D23 Expo, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige also announced that Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington will play the evergreen Dane Whitman, who becomes the Dark Knight in the comics. Fans can now get their first glimpse of the Eternals in a photo from the film.

Marvel Studios revealed the first images of the Eternals today as part of the MCU’s long-running trailer, which hints at the many films to come from the Mouse House. Check out the footage in the video below starting at 2:20.

While there isn’t much footage from Eternal, there is one shot showing the costumes of the team’s superheroes – though the characters can be seen in silhouette against a sunrise/sunset backdrop. There is also a shot of Nanjiani Kingo, McHugh Sprite, Chan Searcy, Madden Ikaris, Jolie Tena and Lee Gilgamesh standing together, but they are in civilian clothes. The last two images, in which Tena, played by Jolie, wields a glowing sword, are perhaps the most exciting and give a glimpse of what we can expect from Eternal’s superheroes. In addition to these shots, the MCU Phase 4 trailer also includes a shot of Hayek as Ayaka riding a horse across a plain. While it’s very interesting to see some footage of Eternal, this teaser doesn’t offer much yet.

It is not yet known when the first full trailer for Eternal will be released. Since the movie comes out about a month after Shang-Chi, it’s possible that we’ll get the first full teaser four weeks after the release of the Shang-Chi trailer, which is in two weeks. But maybe Marvel wants to focus on marketing Black Widow and Shang-Chi and wait until the end of the summer to release the Eternals trailer. Since Zhao is still working on completing Eternals in its entirety, Marvel might wait until the final version is ready. For now, fans will have to wait until the full trailer is released, but in the meantime, these first images from Eternal effectively promote the upcoming Marvel film.
