Nintendo Direct – February 2021 Skyward Sword Remaster

Sword Skyward comes out this July for the Nintendo Switch.

Video games

Few video game series achieve the same commendable status and notoriety as Nintendo’s internal IPs. Few are still as well-known as the Legend of Zelda franchise. The year 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of the legendary epic. Hyrule historians have been speculating about what to expect since last year, when Nintendo gave us the Super Mario 3D All-Stars Collection and announced Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury for Mario’s 35th birthday. During a Nintendo Direct that lasted only an hour, the video game giant announced one of the things many fans were hoping for this anniversary year: a remaster of Skyward Sword.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is an interesting topic for Zelda fans. On the one hand, this is one of the best and most insightful reports on a franchise application. On the other hand, many players found the original Nintendo Wii’s proprietary motion controls crippling and very difficult to play with. Everything from wielding Link’s sword to using the numerous tools and weapons at his disposal must be controlled by the Wii’s motion sensors. Zelda fans had high hopes for the Zelda 3D collection, as well as the aforementioned Super Mario triple pack, which included the Twilight Princess, Wind Waker and Skyward Sword HD ports. As of this Direct, we’re only getting a second title, but I’m still hoping for a double package of the first two titles.

As described by Zelda series director and producer Eiji Aonuma, this is an HD remastered port of the original Wii game, with enhanced motion controls via the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con controllers. Joy-Cons allow you to increase the range and accuracy of your motion capture movements (as long as you don’t have stick drift). You can also use the sword belt – whether or not you’ve hardened the goddess sword into a master sword – and the shield to take out enemies. More importantly, the game team has worked tirelessly to create a way for players to use their standard button controllers. Whether you want to play the game in Manual Switch mode, Nintendo Switch Lite mode, or simply with the Pro Controller, you can now play the entire Skyward Sword series in any of these ways without being bound by strict motion controls.

To encourage players to use their Joy-Cons, Nintendo is releasing a Legend of Zelda Joy-Con set with the remastered HD game. The left and right Joy-Con are for Guillain Link’s shield and the master sword respectively, and are truly beautiful. This pair is a must-have for any Legend of Zelda fan worth its weight in rupees. Not much is known about the remaster at the moment, and we won’t see any other announcements later in the year as part of the 35th anniversary celebrations, but the Nintendo Direct also teased an announcement for Hyrule Warriors: A passport to the disaster era in the making. All we know right now is that the pass, whose first wave of content will launch in June, will add additional weapons and costumes for Link, expand the list of playable characters, and offer more features. A special edition with controllers and The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD will appear on the 16th. July in business. The software is available for pre-order on the Nintendo Switch eShop starting today.

Are you excited about these announcements about The Legend of Zelda? Are you satisfied with what you have given us for our 35th anniversary, or are you hoping for more? What publications would you like to see this year? Tell us about it in the comments below!
