In the meantime, here is our previous review of Santa Sangre:
Santa Sangre (Sacred Blood) is a Mexican-Italian avant-garde thriller from 1989, directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky from a script he wrote with Claudio Argento and Roberto Leoni.
The film tells the story of Phoenix, a boy who grew up in a circus, and his life as a teenager and young adult.
Santa Sangre has only been seen in the United States since its premiere in a handful of theatres familiar with Jodorowsky’s earlier works.
In the United States, the film was originally rated NC-17 because it contained some very explicit scenes of violence. However, the cut version was released with an R rating for the bizarre graphic violence and sensuality, as well as for the drug content.

Santa Sangre is a return to a golden age, a time when filmmakers had a bold individual vision and didn’t anxiously try to copy the latest mainstream formulas. It’s a film like I’ve never seen before, a wild kaleidoscope of images and atrocities, a clash between Freud and Fellini. Chicago Sun-Times

Although Santa Sangre is a great movie, it is fair to warn potential viewers that it requires a certain level of intelligence, an open mind and a relatively strong stomach. Although the violence here is not excessive to modern horror standards, it remains impressive and sometimes dark enough to make even the most hardcore gore-heads shudder. Cheeky as hell.
Regardless of the flaws, any film that manages to refer to Todd Browning, James Whale, Alfred Hitchcock, George Romero, Dario Argento and El Santo is in my opinion worth seeing. Vacuum for video
