Secret Invasion Fails for the British People

Television

The Skrulls are starting to take shape, as Marvel’s Secret Invasion has added some new cast members. The first to be named is Kingsley Ben-Adir via Deadline; Ben-Adir, known for his portrayal of Malcolm X in Miami Night, would play one of the main villains, which should make him the Skull. A few days later, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Olivia Colman, the Oscar winner in The Favourite, will also appear in the series, although her role is unknown. Finally, Variety reported that Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke will be participating in the series, also in an unspecified role. The three MCU newcomers are joined by Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, the lovable Skrull who has so far eliminated all threats to one of Marvel’s coolest alien races. Secret Invasion will consist of six episodes that will air on Disney+, and while filming will begin later this year, a release date has not yet been set.

Marvel knows how to captivate you with their casting choices (mostly, anyway). I haven’t seen anything with Kingsley Ben-Adir yet; I gave up on Peaky Blinders before he participated, and I’ll never watch High Fidelity because it must be a war crime to remake such a perfect film. (I know, it’s just a new adaptation of the book – like a Godfather remake). I love Olivia Colman a lot, thanks to a British sitcom called Peep Show and especially thanks to her role as a spy in the wonderful The Night Manager (alongside Marvel frontman and fellow Brit Tom Hiddleston). But there’s no point in pretending Emilia Clarke isn’t the one who turns me on the most. I loved her role as Daenerys in Game of Thrones, where she was my favorite character along with Tyrion. She doesn’t seem to have done anything since then (I replaced it last Christmas; keep it), so I’m glad she has something else important on her list than a sequel that had no reason to exist. Now comes the guessing game we play in Vegas, depending on who these three represent. Ben-Adir seems appropriate for one of the Skrull leaders and I have no idea who Coleman is. As for Clark, the first thing I think of is Verneuk, the Skull Queen and the main villain of the comic book Secret Invasion, although We Got This Covered (yes, I know, it’s like the quote of the boy in the playground eating bugs, but we’re just speculating here) suggests that she could be Abigail Brand, the leader of SWORD. It would have made sense to put her in after WandaVision – I even thought the series would end with her appearance – but Emilia Clarke is not cut out for the role. Abigail is harsh and violent, and I don’t see her doing it convincingly. She can play Vernake because it’s a more regal and sexy kind of evil than a ball smasher. But we’ll see what happens.

Do you like the cast of Secret Invasion? Who do you think each actor will play? Is there room for another British star in the Skull ranks? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned for more from Geeks + Gamers!
