Simon Walterson is a famous American who is mostly known for his role in the popular movie “The Princess Bride” as the character “Puddleglum the Frog of Thunder”. In this blog post, I will be writing about who Simon Walterson is, and his family background. So, who is Simon Walterson?

Among the several anomalies seen in Journey Into Mystery, we can spot for a brief moment also a frog dressed like Thor, desperately trying to reach Mjolnir: that is the first live action appearance of the mighty Throg the Frog of Thunder, a superhero who’s more powerful than he looks… and that is also more human than he looks. This will probably be a one-time cameo for Throg, who’s hardly usable in any capacity in the MCU… provided that he doesn’t join the Guardians of the Galaxy as his comicbook counterpart did. Let’s see together.
Simon Walterson was born in New York City, and was a young football promise in college. Unfortunately, at the apex of his sports career, an accident to his knee took away from him the possibility to access the professional leagues… but he didn’t care anymore, as he had found the love of his life. Simon married his perfect woman, and the two were happy together: she showed him a universe of purpose beyond sports, and the two of them did many charitable works together, spending their nights feeding homeless people. One fateful day, however, Simon’s wife was killed in a tragic accident. Desperate, the man lost everything, abandoned his house and his life, traveling around to seek a way to speak with his dead wife, even if just for one more moment. In his pain, he resorted to all kinds of mystics and fortunetellers, always finding frauds and swindlers… until he arrived to a Romani woman, who was the real deal. The woman wasn’t able to bring the dead woman’s spirit back to the land of the living, but she spoke to her, and learnt the she had been pregnant by the time she died. Simon was even sadder after the news… and plus he had no money to pay the witch: the old woman, angered, cursed him, and before he knew it, Simon was a frog. In his new state, he wandered until he reached Central Park, where many other frogs resided. Realizing he could speak their language, he stayed with them, changing his name into Puddlegulp, and was welcomed at the court of King Glugworth. Unfortunately, the frogs were in the middle of a bloody war with the rats, led by the fearsome Southside, and Puddlegulp joined the war effort, finding a new life away from his previous one’s complications and sorrows. As a frog, life was simpler, relationships were purer… unfortunately, they were also losing the war.
While the rats were about to poison the frogs’ waters, another outsider came, a huge frog who called himself Thor: after seeing him fight with incredible strength (well, at least for a frog), Puddlegulp recognized in him the fabled God of Thunder, and convinced him to fight for the frogs’ cause. The king had just been murdered, but Thor, using the Morlock Piper and his alligators, vanquished the rats. Puddlegulp thanked him, and accompanied him to his chariot, where Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, his goats, were waiting for him… along with his mystic hammer Mjolnir. Thor lifted Mjolnir, and came back to Asgard as a Thunder Frog to face Loki and force him to undo the spell… while Puddlegulp was left behind, with a bunch of rats back for their revenge. Panicking, the frog spotted a sliver of Mjolnir, chipped off by Toothgnasher: he lifted it with all his (little) might, and obtained a fraction of Thor’s power. As the mighty Throg, he vanquished the attacking rats, and came back to his pond as a hero. The Frog of Thunder protected Central Parks’ frogs from all kind of threats, from rats to alligators, and when the Morlocks, among which there was also his friend the Piper, were massacred by the Marauders, he also called back the original Thor to go and save who he could. He even became prince of the frogs, acting more as a protector than a ruler, leaving politics to Princess Greensong. With a power such as his own, however, a bigger world needed the Frog of Thunder: the Inhuman dog Lockjaw, on a quest for the Infinity Gems, sought him in Central Park, and recruited him in the Pet Avengers. No more rats for the Frog of Thunder, as now the enemies in front of him were beings such as Thanos the Mad Titan and the monstrous Giganto: Throg had been the biggest frog in his small pond, but now he was swimming into the ocean…
Simon Walterson is a man who has chosen to leave his previous life behind, finding in a smaller, simpler existence all the serenity and purpose that he had lost in his human life, crippled by pain and sorrow. As Throg, he is Midgard‘s mightiest amphibian, and his mystic hammer Frogjolnir grants him a fraction of Thor’s powers, including superhuman strength and durability, flight, and the ability to control lightnings and storms… even if on a much smaller scale than the original’s. A mighty warrior with the appearance of a small and harmless creature, the Frog of Thunder is Central Park’s protector, a champion of good ready to bring the thunder on evil in all his forms, with his justice reaching much further than his arm’s length.
