In the fast-paced adventure that is The Five Rules of Success, Santiago Segura takes the wheel. This is not a game for the faint of heart.

X (Santiago Segura) is an ex-convict who has just been freed from prison. He devises a strategy for getting back on his feet. Things are beginning to look better now that a new job is in the pipeline. As X experiences memories to his past, life begins to overwhelm him once again, revealing the reason he was sent to prison. The Five Rules of Success creates a psychedelic arthouse experience by combining a mesmerizing ambiance with a hard-hitting narrative.

Rule 1: Aim for the stars. Don’t be naive.

I wasn’t sure what to anticipate from this film going in. After seeing him in season two of Scream, Segura became one of my favorite actors, so when I learned he was starring in this fever dream-filled film, I knew I wanted to see it. Orson Oblowitz has managed to capture something genuine. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience from start to finish, from writing to directing.

The story alternates between being entertaining and becoming tedious. The flashing images may make it difficult to see at times. It’s essentially an arthouse remake of the Safdie Brothers’ Good Time. Exploring America’s underbelly while immersed in a hallucinogenic environment. The Five Rules of Success doesn’t disappoint in any way, but Good Time does a better job of mixing everything together for a more enjoyable viewing.

Rule 2: Keep all negativity at bay.

In this character, Segura is hypnotic. He does an excellent job as a leader. As the narrative progresses, his five guidelines for achieving the success he desires flash over the screen. He wants to establish lofty objectives for himself, shut out any negativity, materialize the goals he’s set out to achieve, prioritize himself and his health, and never depend on others. If X follows the guidelines, he will accomplish his objective.

At first, X’s outlook is very upbeat. He is well aware of what is best for him. As we learn more about him, we begin to sympathize with him. As life becomes more uncontrolled, he finds himself in perilous circumstances, unsure of which course to follow. Is he willing to stick to the good course he’s charted for himself? Or will he go to any length to acquire the money he needs to be happy?

Rule 3: Make Your Goals a Reality.

Danny (Jonathan Howard) gets acquainted with X and joins him on his trip. Their friendship is riddled with flaws. They have no idea what is right or wrong, and they are the worst influences on each other. X will go to any length to get back on track, and Danny will be there to help him along the way. They both feel like victors once they discover they can join up and avoid working extra-long shifts.

The American Dream lies at the heart of The Five Rules of Success. X aspires to be what every guy in America aspires to be. After being in prison for so long, he’s just a little behind. His drive to accomplish so much in such a short amount of time is inspirational. However, as his perspective evolves, we see that he isn’t always correct. Along the way, he makes a series of errors that lead to his ultimate demise. You can’t put your confidence in everyone you meet.

Rule 4: Put your mental and physical health first.

The music is one of the highlights of the 83-minute film. It’s electrifying. On the one hand, you have mesmerizing images that immerse you in the action. On the other hand, you have a score that makes you want to jump out of your skin. It’s a stressful journey through X’s life after he’s been released from prison, and we get to see every moment of it.

The editing provides for a fascinating viewing experience. You never know what pictures will be inserted into the next scenario or when the next rule will appear on the screen. The editing technique is unique, ranging from mirror views of X transforming into someone else to random close-ups and tracking shots.

Rule 5: Don’t Put Your Trust in Anything or Anyone.

Overall, The Five Rules of Success is a lighthearted criminal drama. It’s both strange and amusing. If you like Good Time, I’m certain you’ll enjoy this.
