This week, the much anticipated movie The Flight Attendant starring Kaley Cuoco & Richard Jenkins, dropped on Netflix. When the movie landed, I was excited to see what kind of movie it is. The Flight Attendant is about the highs and lows of a flight attendant. It is a similar story to Whip It and What If, where the main character is on a journey of self-discovery and growth. I was also excited to see Richard Jenkins, who I think is one of the best character actors working today.

Kaley Cuoco is a celebrity, making her her own airplane. She has a lot of fans, and I am one of them. As a fan, I have just one question for her: where do you put your airplane? [FADE IN]

Core team: Kaley Cuoco, Michelle Huysmans.

Creator: Steve Yockey.

I don’t know what I expected from Kaley Cuoco. She’s certainly a talented comedic actress, but after 12 seasons as Penny on The Big Bang Theory, it was hard to imagine her in any other role. These are the pitfalls of long-lived issues. But she has managed to free herself from any restraint, masterfully portrayed in the film Flight Attendant.

Flight Attendant is based on the novel by Chris Bohjalian and stars Cassie Bowden. Cassie makes the most of her job, throwing parties in glamorous cities around the world. She also drinks too much, sleeps with strangers and is generally not very responsible.

After a fling with a passenger (banned, Cassie) leads to a date in Bangkok (banned, Cassie), she finds herself in a very precarious and dangerous situation that she doesn’t understand. Their attempts to understand what happened lead them into a fascinating web of deceit and self-deception.

A lot happens in the eight episodes of Flight Attendant. This comedy/drama/thriller does not neglect any aspect of its three genres. Not surprisingly, Cuoco was able to embrace the comedic elements of Cassie’s decompensation. His character is a carefree mess, and Cuoco makes the most of it.

But Cassie also carries a lot of baggage and trauma. By examining her through hallucinations and memories, we gradually reveal the pain she carries. This is where Cuoco shines the most, as she is forced to explore the past she wants to bury and confront her destructive coping mechanisms.

The support team deserves a lot of credit for keeping all the moving parts together. Michelle Huisman is Alex, a disastrous date in Bangkok. He becomes part of Cassie’s inner dialogue and a crucial partner in overcoming her current crisis and her troubled past.

Rosie Perez is a flight attendant who has a subplot created specifically for the plot of the second season. T.R. Knight is Cassie’s brother, Davey. He loves her, but her behavior and denial of their shared past have led to a terrible breakup.

And then there’s Annie, beautifully played by Zosia Mamet. Annie is Cassie’s long-suffering best friend. She’s also opinionated, emotionally unavailable, and smart as hell. Oh, yeah, and a lawyer. Cassie definitely needs Annie.

Flight Attendant’s scripts are precise and intelligent, successfully adapting literary techniques without compromising the integrity of the story. I haven’t read the novel, but now I’d like to know how Bohjalian wrote Cassie’s inner dialogue. The series keeps the tension high and the mystery of that night in Bangkok is fully revealed through Cassie’s ups and downs.

The first season of Flight Attendant is a fast-paced rollercoaster ride of intrigue and emotion, with a heavy dose of dark comedy. A second season is planned, but the first season is satisfying in its own right. It airs on HBO’s Max channel.
