What are the best video camera applications for iPhone and Android smartphones?

Before you can start recording videos with your smartphone, you need to choose the right video camera application. All smartphones usually have some kind of camera application in their operating system. They can go from good to worthless.

When it comes to taking videos, you’ll soon find that most of the camera applications installed on your smartphone aren’t powerful enough to take professional videos. Fortunately, there are several camcorder applications on the market that will soon allow you to use your little bag of tricks to create quality video.

Choosing the right smartphone app can be tricky, but it’s important to get it right. It should have the right mix of manual features, but not be difficult to use. Most video camera applications offer several options for recording video with your smartphone, but not all of them are equally good.

Some have no manual controls for picture and sound in video recording, and others take so long to change the settings that it’s not worth it.

So, which camcorder app should you buy? I will say that the application market is full of complete applications for making videos. Unfortunately, that is not the case. I have mentioned elsewhere in this book that most available camcorder applications do not have on-screen sound levels to control the sound. If you want to make a video that doesn’t need sound, that’s no problem for you.

Some applications only have specific functions, such as B. Delayed motion, which can be useful for certain tasks. However, if you want to record sound, make sure the selected camcorder application has sound levels on the screen. This is the only way to ensure that your sound is recorded correctly.

Other functions that you will not find in some camcorder applications are focus and exposure control. It is important that you can control these settings manually. There is nothing worse than watching a video where the focus is constantly changing or the exposure is not constant due to changes in light. You need to adjust and fix them to keep your video sharp and get the right exposure.

Most professional camcorder applications have these features. To be a good filmmaker, you need to master focusing and lighting to make a professional video.

In addition to setting exposure and sharpness, you need to control the image size, frame rate, and bit rate. These settings are important if you want to control the quality of your video. With the built-in camera application, you will struggle to capture 4K images at 100 Mbps and a frame rate of 25 frames per second.

These settings are compatible with a professional camcorder application such as. B. Filmic Pro available. Controlling these settings also means getting the best video quality your project needs.

You should also be aware that not all features of some business applications for camcorders are available on all smartphones. Older versions of the iPhone cannot record 4K video, and some Android smartphones cannot record video at 25 frames per second. So to get the most out of a professional camcorder application, you need the latest high specification smartphone.

However, if you only want to record video in 1080 HD, you will find that most smartphones are capable of doing so. If you’re using an Android smartphone, make sure it supports the Camera2 API so you can take advantage of the best features of applications like Filmic Pro.

So here are my recommendations for video camera applications for your smartphone. All the camcorder apps mentioned above have professional camcorder controls, so you can customize your smartphone the way you want. Some are specific to iOS or Android only.

So check if the camcorder app is available for your operating system before searching the app store. Also keep in mind that camcorder applications are constantly being updated. So make sure the camcorder application you choose has all the features you need before you buy.

Cinema Pro

One of the most popular applications for camcorders is Filmic Pro. It has been used for numerous video productions on iPhone and even feature films like Tangerine, Insane and High Flying Bird. Filmic Pro has been around for a while, but gets better and better with each new version. It also has many features for professional video recording and turns your smartphone’s camera into a real camcorder.

It has zoom control, multiple frame rates, manual focus and exposure, white balance and shutter speed control. It also features on-screen sound levels for good sound recording quality and manual control of sound reinforcement.

Filmic Pro has many different aspects and resolution settings. You can set the image size to 16×9 (widescreen), 4×3 (old TV standard), 1×1 (square), which is good for social media, and 9×16 for IGTV. The faster frame rate can go up to 240 frames per second, so you can work at both slow and fast speeds.

If you want to add metadata to your recordings, you can insert this information into Filmic Pro so that each video clip you record has a time and place. You can also save all selected settings as presets, so you don’t have to change the camera functions every time you create a new video.

Filmic Pro records video at a maximum resolution of 4K at 100 Mbps, giving you super high video quality. Note that your smartphone must support this feature to use it. On recent iPhones, it can also save in LOG format. This gives you a flat image profile that is best suited for color correction.

Filmic Pro also supports third-party hardware. If you equip your iPhone with an anamorphic lens from Moondog Labs, the image will be stretched and you will have trouble looking at it. Filmic Pro fits this lens so you can view the image correctly. Filmic Pro also fits some Nikon or Canon DSLR lenses and has support for manual gimbals.

There is also a classic version of Filmic Pro for older iPhone models. So if you have an older iPhone, you can still use Filmic Pro to shoot videos. However, due to the technological limitations of older iPhone models, you only have access to some of Filmic Pro’s features.

Until a few years ago, Filmic Pro was only available to iPhone and iPad users. Android users couldn’t help but look forward to the video features that Filmic Pro has brought to the iPhone. But now, after months of development, the Filmic Pro team has released an Android version of Filmic Pro. Just like the iPhone, Filmic Pro turns the camera on your Android smartphone into a fully functional video camera.

Most of the features available for the iPhone are also available on Android. However, users should keep in mind that due to the many makes and models of Android smartphones, not all features of Filmic Pro will work. So before you buy, check if your Android smartphone supports Camera2 API to make sure Filmic Pro works properly.

Cinema FV-5

If you don’t want to use Filmic Pro on your Android smartphone, you can try Cinema FV-5. This application started as a photo application, but later the developers created an improved video version. It has many of the same features as Filmic Pro, but is only available for Android smartphones. The Cinema FV-5 offers a variety of professional video settings and manual controls to enhance your smartphone camera.

These include exposure compensation, ISO control, metering, manual focus, white balance, zoom, different frame rates and bit rates. It also shows the sound levels on the screen, so you can see where your sound is loudest.

Like Filmic Pro, you can add metadata to your videos so you’ll know where and when you shot them. You can also choose different image formats, up to 4K resolution if your smartphone supports it.

I would say that due to the large number of brands and models of Android smartphones on the market, not all features will work on some smartphones. This means that you may not be able to use all the features of the application due to the different technology of some Android smartphones. Nevertheless, I still think Cinema FV-5 is a great camcorder application for Android.

ProCamCamera

Another great iPhone application is ProCam. Although ProCam is marketed as a camera application, it has a very interesting set of features for video. It has all the manual controls, including exposure, white balance, ISO sensitivity, manual focus and shutter speed control. ProCam also has an impressive choice of frame rates. You can record at 24, 25 and 30 frames per second.

You can also set up to 120 frames per second in 1080 HD if you want to record in slow motion. The resolution size is fully adjustable and the ProCam can record up to Ultra HD 4K with an image size of 3840 x 2160. You can also upgrade to Super 4K by purchasing an application that allows your iPhone to reach an image size of 4038 x 2268 and 150mbs.

Other useful features include an on-screen sound level display, which allows you to see how loud the sound is produced by the connected microphone. Note, however, that you can’t control the audio gain like you can in Filmic Pro. There’s also video image stabilization and a hard drive space indicator.

Another feature is the integrated video editor. It’s not as advanced as other specialized video editing programs, but can be useful for a quick edit or two if your video needs it.

Kinematics

The camera and editing app Kinomatic is another good choice for the iPhone. It has been released many times, but only recently have its impressive features been expanded to include 4K. Many camera applications do not have manual controls that allow you to record good quality video and audio. Kinomatic has none of these problems, and it has many interesting features for amateurs and professionals.

Recording video is easy and done by pressing the big red record button. On the left side of the screen, you’ll find a series of icons that allow you to adjust exposure, lock focus, add camera stabilization, and set white balance.

At the bottom of these icons is the control button. Here you can make all the settings for video recording. You can choose the picture format between 480p, 720p, 1080p and 4K. So you have a lot of decisions to make. There is also a frame rate of 24 to 240 if you want to record in slow motion.

In these settings, you will see the monitor tone switch. Turn it on and you can see on the screen how loud the sound is. When an external microphone is connected, this button turns into an audio gain control. This means that you can increase or decrease the gain according to the volume of the sound. Under Audio Controls you can choose the audio codec you want to use to record your audio. You can choose between compressed or uncompressed AAC with a bit depth of 32. So if you want good sound quality, Kinomatic has some options.

Other features that can be activated are a battery indicator and a hard disk space indicator. They’re useful for knowing how much power you have left on your iPhone and how much space your hard drive is taking up with your recordings. At the bottom left of the main icons is the Preset button.

This allows you to save your favorite recording settings so you don’t have to reload them each time you use the application. It’s handy for a quick set-up, so you can start filming with a minimum of fuss. There is also a set of presets already set up for you. So if you don’t know where to start, this will be a big help.

Another great feature of Kinomatik is the integrated video editor. Here you can import clips from anywhere on your iPhone and start editing your video. There are many resources, such as. B. A video cutter that allows you to insert videos into your timeline. You can import songs from your music library to create a soundtrack for a video or import voice recordings.

You can also adjust the sound levels in the editor to create single track mixes. Another additional feature is the titration tool. You can add credits to your latest videos to give your finished film the final professional touch.

Mavis

Mavis is another professional application that allows you to manually control the camera on your iPhone. It is similar to Kinomatic and Filmic Pro, and the developers have recently updated the application and given it many new features. In the latest version, they have redesigned many tools so that the application can be used more widely for video production. The sound instruments provide full support for internal and external sound sources. You can connect a microphone to the Lightning connector or the headphone jack and use Mavis to monitor and record incoming audio.

The application also has an audio gain control for internal and external microphones, which allows you to adjust the sound level. You can also see where your sound reaches its maximum with the on-screen sound levels. Another great feature of Mavis is real-time audio streaming. This means that if your microphone is equipped with a headphone jack, you can connect headphones to hear the sound while you record. This is useful for ensuring that your audio recordings are of high quality.

The Mavis viewfinder supports an anamorphic Moondog lens and a Beastgrip DOF adapter. This reduces image blur, so you can see the image clearly after correcting the lens. In addition, photography becomes much easier with these hardware accessories. This allows only the viewfinder to be manipulated, not the recorded media. This means that you always have complete control over which method you use to delete your records during post-processing.

Mavis also has full color control, giving you total control over your image. The built-in Vector Viewer lets you adjust color, and the Waveform Monitor lets you adjust black and white for a perfect image. These areas show an accurate analysis of your color values as seen by your iPhone camera. Mavis also has many resolution settings.

You can shoot in resolutions up to 4K with bit rates up to 100mbs. You can also choose a different frame rate of up to 240 frames per second when recording in slow motion. You save them in quick presets so you don’t have to keep adjusting them. Video files can be saved in the camera roll or in the Mavis application. Higher resolution 4K images are only stored in the Mavis application, not in the camera roll.

Mavis works best in manual mode, so may not be suitable for a beginner. However, focus and exposure are easy to control while shooting. When the camera is not in manual mode, the monitor displays information about exposure and focus. When you set the focus and exposure, the application immediately switches to manual mode.

When you want to change the settings, the menu on the left gives you quick access to various functions, including exposure and focus. Mavis is free to download if you want to try it on your iPhone. However, in order to access the advanced features, you need to purchase some of them through in-app purchases.

4K cinema

Cinema 4K is a professional camera application for Android smartphones. What sets it apart from other Android camera apps is the ability to capture video in a flat image profile. This means you get a wider dynamic range in your videos, so you can then color them professionally in desktop video editing programs like DaVinci Resolve.

At first glance, the video may seem boring and flat, but if you enjoy it, you have a few image options. It supports 4K video and HD in 1080p and 720p resolutions. You can choose between frame rates of 24, 25 and 30 frames per second and video rates of 15 to 200 mpg. Full manual control of white balance, exposure and focus.

You can also lock these settings so you don’t have to reinstall them every time. There’s a low storage warning to alert you when the hard drive is running low, and you can also record to a micro SD card if your smartphone supports it.
