what is a stage channel in discord?

With the free time the COVID-19 virus has given us, it’s a chance to watch old movies again. Today: X-Men Origins: Wolverine and answer the question: Was it really that bad?

Short answer: Yes, but a longer one: This didn’t have to happen.

After the success of Fox’s X-Men in 2000, a film that showed that a comic book superhero movie could actually be good, the excellent X 2 and the disappointing X-Men 3 followed in 2003 : The Last Stand in 2006, the company still wanted to get everything out of the franchise that it could.

And so in 2009, they released X-Men Orgins: Wolverine, whose reception was ambiguous.

While Hugh Jackman did a decent job in the lead role, Liev Schreiber was pretty awesome as Wolverine’s nemesis Sabretooth, and the rest of the cast was pretty adequate, the story itself degenerated into schlock.

As people often complain about prequels like Solo, the film tried to do too much in too little time, and ended up pitting Wolverine and Sabretooth against a version of Deadpool that bears no resemblance to the character from the comics. Ryan Reynolds then got the chance to play a more faithful version of the comic in the Deadpool movie and proved to be an iconic actor in the role.

Step by step

X-Men Origins: The movie Wolverine is set in Canada in 1845, when a sickly young boy, James Howlett, reacts to his father’s murder by knocking bones out of his fists and killing his father’s killer. It turns out that the killer is her real father, Thomas Logan, the gardener.

We then get to see Victor and James fight side by side in various wars, until they are transferred to the war in Vietnam. An argument between Creed, who is losing his humanity, and the officer leads to Howlett and Creed being executed by a firing squad. But thanks to their respective therapeutic factors, they don’t die.

When Major William Stryker discovers this, he offers them a place on his X-Team, a group of mutants who conduct covert operations, including one that led to the near-mass destruction of a village and was only stopped by Howlett’s refusal.

Six years later, James lives with Silverfox in Canada. He meets Stryker, who informs him that members of his former team have been killed. Silverfox is murdered, and James decides it was Victor’s doing. After losing the fight to Victor, Stryker subjects him to an adamantium bonding process that makes his skeleton indestructible.

Howlett’s research leads him to the island, where Stryker is conducting experiments on captured mutants to create the vile Deadpool parody that so many people know and hate.

Victor and James work together to defeat this Deadpool, and Silverfox, who was ultimately not killed, leads the captured mutants to Professor Xavier. She is mortally wounded, after which Stryker fires an adamantium bullet into James’ head to erase his memories. Silverfox uses his mutant powers to make Stryker leave, then dies. When Howlett regains consciousness after being shot in the head, he doesn’t recognize her and removes Logan and Wolverine’s names from his chips.

Communication

In the writing world, the phrase kill your darlings means to remove anything from the story that distracts you from the main point, no matter how much you like them, and in my opinion, there wasn’t enough killing in this movie.

To me, the idea of giving Wolverine an origin story like in the comics detracts from a short, deadly anti-hero with a chip on both shoulders. However, this film is based on the Wolverine Origins series, which had its moments, and the introduction of Victor Creed, Sabretooth, as James’ older half-brother to buy time was acceptable.

I loved the X-Men part of the movie: Origin: Wolverine has done his service on Creed’s side, and I’d like to see more time for James and Victor’s military service in Team X’s many wars and missions.

In my opinion, the story started to get bogged down when we got to the point where James started living with Silverfox. Time jumps are rarely a good idea, and almost never work when we need to start caring enough about a new character to understand the protagonist’s desire for revenge.

The writers then added everything to the film, including a kitchen sink, young X-Men and a cameo by an aging Patrick Stewart as the young Professor Charles Xavier. Taylor Kitsch as Remy LeBeau/Gambit wasn’t bad casting, but he was just another face in the mass of the X-Men movie: Origin: Wolverine.

Prisons

I think for a ninety minute movie, the writers should have settled for a simple revenge story.

  1. James and Victor are mutual children who grew up together. They are friends with a common bond. Almost immortal, they watch the world change around them.
  2. James and Victor fight side by side. Over the decades, they fight together against various enemies of the time periods they live in, eventually culminating in Team X. Instead of a simple montage, some time, perhaps a minute or two, is spent on each period to establish the relationship between Victor and James.
  3. James and Victor break up because of Victor’s bloodlust. James gets up to prevent the third person from being killed by Victor, but Victor punches him and kills the third person anyway.
  4. James gets an Adamantium upgrade as part of the Weapon X project. Based on the Weapon X graphic novel, this leads to a brief outburst in which James kills the staff of the asylum and flees into the woods. It’s the trauma, not the adamantium bullet, that causes James to lose most of his memory, but he retains enough to keep up with Victor.
  5. James and Victor meet in a final confrontation in which James is defeated but lives, paving the way for the beginning of the X-Men story.

Since this is a prequel, the film is not bound by what will be allowed in the following films. Rather, it was meant to identify the conflicts that would be resolved in the following films. Is the relationship between James and Victor in X-Men: Origin: Does Wolverine find himself in a state that naturally leads to their conflict in X-Men? In my opinion, this is not the case.

Without the introduction of the kitchen sink and the aging Patrick Stewart, the film would have had more time to focus on the main character, the antagonist and their conflict. Childhood friends who have become arch enemies have enough pathos to carry the story, as long as it’s well written.

Here’s how I would improve an X-Men movie: Origin: Wolverine.
